Move to us without renumbering: Layer 2 extension

Move to EuroVPS without renumbering. We stretch your VLANs from your current site or between our datacenters, so servers keep their IPs and move one at a time.
LC fibre in hand at the rack

Changing provider usually means changing every address you own, and with them DNS, firewall rules, licences, partner allow lists and application configuration. We extend your Layer 2 network into ours instead, from your current location or between our own datacenters, so your servers keep their addresses and move one at a time, at the pace your application allows.

What it is

Layer 2 extension makes the same VLAN exist in two places at once. A server still at your current provider and a server already in our datacenter sit on the same subnet, use the same gateway and see each other as neighbours. You move hosts individually, test each one in its new home, and move it back if anything is not right.

It works between our own sites in Athens, Amsterdam and Toronto, and from any location we can reach by fibre: your current datacenter, your colocation cage or your own server room.

There is no big-bang cutover night.

How we build it

  • A dedicated, encrypted path. A purpose-built Linux endpoint at each end runs a WireGuard tunnel between the two locations, over the fibre path we agree with you.
  • One VXLAN segment per stretched VLAN. Inside the tunnel, every VLAN you extend gets its own VXLAN interface and its own bridge, attached to a VLAN sub-interface on the endpoint's trunk. You hand us the VLANs; nothing on your servers changes.
  • A native citizen of our fabric. On our side the trunk lands on a leaf of our Cisco Nexus EVPN fabric as an ordinary trunk port, so your stretched VLAN enters the fabric exactly like a native one: anycast gateways, dual-homed hosts and all.
  • Numbering that cannot collide. VLAN numbers are mapped to a fixed offset where needed, so your numbering plan and ours never overlap, and the fabric identifier is always derived from the local number. The fabric's hourly integrity check enforces that rule, so a stretched segment can never land on an identifier that belongs to someone else.
  • Predictable throughput. Each tunnel is pinned to its own CPU core. Our runbook defines exactly when to add a second tunnel on a second core, so capacity grows by design rather than by surprise.
  • Loop protection kept intact. Trunk ports use targeted BPDU filtering instead of a blanket spanning-tree exception, so the extension behaves cleanly without weakening loop protection on either side.

What it protects you from

  • Forced IP renumbering and the DNS, firewall and application churn that comes with it.
  • A single cutover night with no way back.
  • Breaking integrations that customers and partners have tied to your addresses.
  • A VLAN number collision producing an identifier that looks legitimate but belongs to another tenant.
  • Replication and application traffic crossing between sites unencrypted.

In practice

A national news publisher, moved host by host. The publisher's full stack moved from Amsterdam to Digital Realty Athens over several weeks on this extension. The Athens side was pre-staged and pre-cabled, and servers crossed over in planned batches. The publisher is served from Athens, close to its readers.

Why EuroVPS

  • We sell this as a migration product.
  • It reaches you wherever fibre does, not only between our own buildings.
  • The extension lands inside a real EVPN fabric, not on a flat switch.
  • Encrypted by default, with numbering rules checked by machine.
  • You decide the pace. Hosts move when your application is ready, and they can move back.

FAQ

Can you extend from my current provider? Yes, from any location we can reach by fibre. We place an endpoint at your side, agree the path, and carry your VLANs into our fabric.

Do my servers keep their IP addresses? Yes. The subnet, the gateway and every address stay the same on both sides for as long as the extension runs.

Is the traffic encrypted? Yes. The extension runs inside a WireGuard tunnel from end to end.

Can a server move back if something is wrong? Yes. Because both sides share the VLAN, moving a host back is the same operation as moving it forward.

Can this carry production traffic during the migration? Yes. Capacity is sized from measured throughput and grows by adding tunnels and cores when your workload needs it.
