Platform currency and upgrade discipline

Every platform we run stays on current security releases as routine: watched releases, pre-flight checks, backups first, one box at a time.

Most platforms fall behind for one reason: nobody owns the upgrade. We do. Every platform we run, for ourselves and for customers, is kept on current security releases as part of normal work, with a release watcher, a pre-flight check, a backup, a rollback and a measured result every time.

What it is

An upgrade discipline that applies the same way to everything we operate: ticketing, team chat, live chat, document platforms, DNS, monitoring, DDoS detection, databases, web stacks and the operating systems underneath them. The goal is simple. No platform should ever be so far behind that upgrading it becomes a project.

How we build it

  • We know when a release lands. Wherever the vendor publishes releases, a watcher announces each new build to our operations channel with its changelog. A guard labels back-ports for old branches as "do not deploy", so nobody accidentally steps backwards.
  • Our instances first. Major releases go to our own instances first and run there before customers receive them.
  • Downtime measured, and reported in seconds. Where an upgrade needs an interruption, we time it and tell you what it was.

What it protects you from

  • A platform years behind, carrying vulnerabilities that were fixed long ago.
  • Surprise downtime nobody measured or explained.
  • A "big bang" migration because routine upgrades were skipped for years.

In practice

Routine, quarter after quarter. Our ticketing platform, live chat, document platform, DDoS detection and team chat all moved to new releases in the same quarter.

Team chat. Our own Mattermost instance takes every major release first; customer instances are upgraded only after it has run there.

Why EuroVPS

  • Every platform has an owner and a release watcher.
  • Majors are proven on our own systems before they reach yours.
  • Downtime is measured in seconds and reported, not estimated.

FAQ

Will you upgrade my platform without telling me? Security releases on managed platforms are applied as routine and announced. Major releases and anything that changes behaviour are scheduled with you.

Can I hold back an upgrade? Yes, for a good reason and for a limited time. We will tell you what risk that carries and agree a date.

What if an upgrade goes wrong? We roll back using the plan written before we started, from the backup taken before we started. Then we work out why, before trying again.
