How to set up Nameservers in cPanel/WHM Server

This guide will show you the ropes in how to setup cPanel nameservers and configure them properly so you can run ns1 and ns2.yourdomain.com.

Register Primary and Secondary nameservers with domain registrar with the two IPs you have. Assuming, you have registered the following name servers:

ns1.yourdomain.com 77.235.XX.XX
ns2.yourdomain.com 77.235.XX.XX
  • Log into WHM (Web Host Manager).
  • Select Edit Basic Setup from the Server Configuration menu on the left. Home » Server Configuration » Basic WebHost Manager Setup
  • Enter ns1.yourdomain.com in the Primary Nameserver field. Hit ‘Assign IP Address’, then hit ‘Add an A Entry for this nameserver’.
  • Repeat this process for the Secondary Nameserver “ns2.yourdomain.com”.

In case the domain (yourdomain.com) already exists in the server, please go to edit DNS zone and add A record for ns1 and ns2.yourdomain.com.

Home »DNS Functions »Edit DNS Zone >> Choose a Zone to Edit >> yourdomain.com >> Add New Entries

How to set up Nameservers in Plesk Server

  • Register Primary and Secondary nameservers with domain registrar to with IP’s on the Plesk Onyx server.
  • From Plesk, Create “A” and “PTR” Records for the primary and secondary nameservers in a local domain’s zone designating the two IP’s as nameservers.
  • Create the NS records in the DNS Template under the SERVER section. This will automatically insert the zone records into any newly created domain’s zone file.
  • Add the NS records to any domain that you wish to use the nameservers.

Once your nameservers are setup, clients can then use your own private nameservers for their domains.
